Celebrating a 60th Wedding Anniversary—Day One Adventure

My plan upon arrival in Hawaii is meant to take us down the west coast of Hawaii and down and under the south end, where we will end up in Volcano. I've rented a house through Airbnb that is just one mile outside Volcano National Park. My early plan, until the switch to our itinerary, was to have an early lunch around the south tip of the island. Now that we are past lunch, I figure we can get into the house just in time for dinner. This will then give us time to visit Volcano National Park tonight and again tomorrow.

My mom has two wishes for this trip: a luau and a volcano. I have tried to tell her that she would not be seeing lava spewing out anywhere, but I doubt she has really heard that. Based on the time I have calculated (yes, I'm overusing Planful already), this route should take us two-and-a-half hours. However, Google Maps has a better route that takes us way up and over the center of the island, and so we take it. We load the car to the brim and then squeeze my mom's walker in last. Kevin gets behind the wheel of our gigantic Yukon rental. The SVU smells of fresh plumeria as we head out on our day one adventure.
