Decoding Interpersonal Relationships
Why do some relationships feel effortless, while others are challenging at every turn? Often, it comes down to something simple yet powerful: our differing interpersonal needs—the ways we want to engage with, relate to, and be treated by others. Some seek connection, while others prefer space. Some pursue influence and control, while others are more comfortable stepping back. Some value closeness and openness, while others set clear boundaries. When these needs go unrecognized or are misunderstood by either person in a relationship, it can lead to tension, frustration, or even conflict.
The Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation™ (FIRO®) suite, comprising the FIRO-B and FIRO-Business assessments, measures and helps individuals understand three fundamental interpersonal needs that drive human behavior. It also measures how an individual tends to behave toward others and how they want others to behave in return. By making these often-invisible dynamics visible, the FIRO assessments can improve mutual understanding and help individuals build stronger, more productive relationships.
