The events that unfolded yesterday at the US Capitol were surreal, shocking and, quite frankly, scary for all of us. Rioters breached the Capitol building causing Congress to suspend proceedings to confirm the election of the U.S. president-elect. This lawlessness and violence are the antithesis of democracy, and we must strongly condemn it. Further, the inadequate preparation and failure to respond to the insurrection is yet another grim reminder of the white supremacy that pervades our systems.

Jeff Hayes, President and CEO of The Myers-Briggs Company comments on the events below:

“While I value the right to peaceful protest and demonstration as a means to express perspectives and drive change as one of the foundational tenets of democracy, the unlawful behavior and violence that erupted was both senseless and shameful.

“However, while this was certainly a very dark week in US history, I think we can all take some solace in the fact that, while this rioting delayed the work of our elected officials to ratify the Electoral College Votes for the next president and vice president of the United States, it did not prevent this work from happening. Our elected officials completed this ratification process, certifying that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be the next president and vice president of the United States.

“I think this speaks strongly to the strength of the US Democracy, the strength of the US Constitution and the resolve of the nation and most of its elected officials to uphold and defend this democracy no matter the circumstances.

“As an organization firmly committed to helping individuals, teams and organizations become the best version of themselves, we firmly believe in the power of education, communication, and respectful discourse to resolve differences. While we realize and respect that we may differ in our political views, persistent deception and the call for violence is simply unacceptable. We echo the cry for a peaceful transfer of power.

“Stay safe and take good care of yourselves and one another.”
