Challenge

Creating team cohesion and communication in a high-growth, high-change environment.

Deliveroo’s Amsterdam office is home to a young, ambitious workforce where employees frequently move teams, shifts, or roles. With an average employee age of 27–28, the company faced challenges in maintaining strong communication and collaboration as teams reformed regularly. Rapid growth and an always-on work culture created pressure for fast adaptation, often without the time or tools needed to build mutual understanding.

HR Business Partner Merel Soree observed that many employees didn’t really know their colleagues or how best to work together. There was a need for greater development within teams and more awareness of how different personalities could collaborate effectively. Deliveroo sought to build a consistent foundation for communication, connection, and team spirit—despite the high pace of change.

Solution

MBTI-based personal and team development programme.

Working with consultant Kirsten Hexspoor from The Myers-Briggs Company, Deliveroo introduced a tailored programme using MBTI® Step I™ and Step II™ assessments. The goal was to increase self-awareness and improve team dynamics through structured reflection and shared language.

The process began with MBTI Step I, helping individuals explore their preferences, work styles, and personal strengths. Participants identified their best-fit type and shared their findings in group settings to foster openness and connection.

This was followed by deeper work using MBTI Step II, which explores personality at the facet level. This helped participants—especially those uncertain about their type—gain more personalised insight and understand how their preferences play out in everyday situations. Team sessions incorporated live coaching in buddy pairs, where individuals helped each other reflect on their reports.

Crucially, each session connected MBTI findings to live team topics such as communication, conflict, and decision-making. This made insights practical and immediately relevant to day-to-day collaboration.

Key Programme Elements:

  • MBTI Step I assessment for exploring preferences and work styles
  • MBTI Step II assessment for deeper facet-level personality insight
  • Group sharing sessions to foster openness and connection
  • Live coaching in buddy pairs for report reflection
  • Integration with real team challenges like communication and conflict resolution

Results

Improved team collaboration, shared understanding, and a growing MBTI culture.

The programme led to a noticeable shift in how Deliveroo employees viewed and interacted with one another. Participants gained awareness of both their strengths and blind spots, and became more thoughtful about how to support their teammates.

There was a clear reduction in snap judgments or frustrations with differing styles. Teams now saw personality differences as valuable rather than problematic. For example, one employee changed how he pitched ideas to better resonate with intuitive thinkers—leading to greater interest and engagement from his peers.

The MBTI language became embedded in daily operations. Teams created visible type charts, held monthly reflection discussions, and even modified workspaces to better accommodate both extraverts and introverts.

Soree and her colleagues now aim to expand the programme across more areas of the business, including pairing different types on customer calls to maximise complementary strengths. The success of the MBTI sessions has inspired ongoing enthusiasm and made personality awareness a central part of team development at Deliveroo.
