Challenge

Creating efficient and meaningful data systems to improve officer leadership development.

With more than 1.3 million active personnel, the United States military operates one of the world’s largest and most complex training programmes. A key leadership division wanted to improve its development approach for senior officers—not only by focusing on individual coaching, but by using aggregated performance data to benchmark strengths, identify development areas, and evolve training programs in a more targeted, scalable way.

The goal was to go beyond traditional feedback models and gain a clearer picture of leadership capability across large groups. However, collecting, analysing, and comparing this data efficiently presented logistical challenges—especially as group sizes and training frequency increased. The division sought a scientifically validated approach that would not only generate personal insight for each officer but also inform strategic curriculum planning across the organisation.

Solution

Scaling Leadership Insight with CPI 260®.

To support scalable leadership development, the military adopted the CPI 260® assessment for its scientific rigor and proven link to effective leadership. Officers completed the assessment before attending a two-week in-person training programme, where they received two detailed reports: the Client Feedback Report and the Coaching Report for Leaders. These helped participants understand their leadership strengths, blind spots, and areas for growth. The training included one-on-one coaching, group discussions, and comparative insights across peers and senior leaders. As the programme scaled, The Myers-Briggs Company’s research team developed an automated system to create group summaries, benchmark results against high-performing leaders, and uncover trends across training cohorts. This enabled more strategic resource allocation, better training design, and consistent delivery of leadership insights at scale.

Key Programme Elements:

  • Used CPI 260® for scientifically grounded leadership insights
  • Two core reports: Client Feedback and Coaching Report for Leaders
  • Integrated into a two-week in-person training with coaching
  • Group-level summaries compared participants with peers and top leaders
  • Automated system enabled scalable insight, benchmarking, and training optimisation

Results

From one-to-one coaching to organisation-wide insights—supporting better training and stronger leaders.

With the new data system in place, the military’s leadership division transformed the way it delivered officer training. The process became faster, more consistent, and fully confidential. Personalised feedback was now combined with aggregate leadership data, giving trainers a clearer understanding of strengths and skill gaps across units.

The approach also proved highly cost-effective. Automation freed up facilitator time and improved delivery of leadership development programmes. Insights from CPI 260 assessments helped tailor coaching partnerships, enrich learning conversations, and inform broader training strategies.

Based on the success of the initial rollout, leadership teams began using this data to redesign curricula, justify funding requests, and build leadership capacity across divisions. The CPI 260 is now central to their vision of creating well-rounded, high-impact leaders equipped for the unique demands of military command.
