Today’s workforce spans up to five generations— Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z. Despite common perceptions and stereotypes about intergenerational clashes, inherent conflict between cohorts is not well supported by empirical research. In fact, it’s often these perceptions and stereotypes that fuel unnecessary tension and cause intergenerational conflict.

About the expert

Gail Fann Thomas is faculty emerita at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA and has received numerous awards for her teaching and research. She conducts research on high-performing teams, is co-author of the newly released Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI) Team Report, and currently teaches in leadership development programs for numerous organizations.
